SUDBURY SCULPTOR UNVEILS NEW MINING MONUMENT

SUDBURY, Ontario – A bronze bust of legendary prospector Benny Hollinger was unveiled recently during a private event at the Hollinger Open Pit Lookout in Timmins, Ontario. One of the enhancements Newmont Porcupine has planned for the public Lookout, the bust commemorates the young prospector whose spectacular gold discovery in 1909 was one of the biggest in Canadian mining history.

Created by Tyler Fauvelle (www.tylerfauvelle.ca), a Sudbury-based sculptor with numerous public art monuments in Ontario, the new artwork depicts young Benny Hollinger in his signature hat and vest, and features a relief of the historic Hollinger Mine. A wide gold vein at the back of the artwork symbolizes the historic discovery, and the captivating dream of all gold prospectors.

Speaking at the unveiling, Fauvelle said, “This relief pays tribute not only to the development that came of Benny’s discovery, but to all the prospectors, miners and industry workers that followed. Their spirit of hard work and dedication lives on to this day.”

In a Newmont Canada media release dated May 31, 2024 Dawid Pretorius, Newmont Porcupine’s Mine Manager, said, “The Bust of Benny Hollinger is not only a great addition to the Lookout but plays a significant part in respecting the history of mining in Timmins, especially the Hollinger Mine.”

The Hollinger Open Pit Lookout is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the exception of blast times.
